Meghan Markle is a hashtag relatable queen, just like us. Well kind of, obviously. In an episode of her new Netflix show, With Love, Meghan, she talked to her episode guest Mindy Kaling about the ever popular celebrity move of mixing high with low.
The clip starts out with Kaling asking about her clothes, to which Markle answers. “Yes, I like high low,” she starts, pointing at her pants, “So Zara.” Kaling is incredulous. Markle points to her sweater, “Loro Piana.” And the sweater draped over her shoulders is Jenni Kayne.
If you haven’t picked up on what “high low” means, it’s basically when you mix your nice, higher end clothes with affordable ones. So think, jeans by Levi’s and a sweater by Missoni. Or Converse sneakers and an OPEN YY leather jacket. Essentially, it’s what most people who are invested in fashion do, mostly out of necessity. But when celebs do it, obviously it garners more attention because they don’t have to dress high low. And I don’t think it’s necessarily insincere or performative. I do think celebrities, for all that is accessible to them, actually do enjoy small tastes of living like regular people.

It is funny though, watching celebrities know what a big deal it will be to admit. Meghan Markle wearing Zara is a story, and she’s not naive about that. Kaling and Markle alluded to the kind of thing I’m about in the episode. In addition to talking about high and low dressing, they also talked about their fast food habits growing up, where Kaling said, “I don’t think anyone in the world knows that Meghan Markle has eaten Jack in the Box.”
